1. Description
I was looking for a software developer to participate in a project that I had. I created the Terms of Reference with information about the project and the requirements for the professional that I needed, and then published it on every WhatsApp group related with software development. Very soon I started receiving applications on my company’s email address.
One of the emails read “Here is my resume.”, that is it. No introduction, no contextualization, nothing, just “here is my resume”. It looked like someone was forcing with to apply.
2. Feelings
I thought “how unprofessional this is”, I felt very bad for this person, I even thought about replying to his email telling with why email and his resume was not professional.
3. Evaluation
3.1. Positive
It is very difficult to find a positive aspect about this event, I can only say that the only positive side was that it made the evaluation process a lot easier for me.
Another positive aspect is that it reminded me very clearly the importance of paying attention to details, of polishing your application, of organizing your information in order to make it more compelling to others, and how that can be the differentiating factor in your success.
3.2. Negative
Although was easy for me to fail his application, I had 1 less candidate that could potentially help me with this project and that is bad.
4. Analysis
Thinking in retrospective now, there are couple of reasons on why he may have sent a badly written email. Maybe he just did not care about the opportunity, and was one of those persons who only apply for position just to see feel that they are desired (guilt on that one).
Also, maybe he just did not know how important writing good emails and resumes are. And if that is the case, I hope he learns it soon.
5. Conclusion
Knowing how to write emails is very important, especially when the stakes are high. I believe we should try our best to always to make whatever we do look good, we do not know when the next big opportunity may come.
This made me remember about Napolean’s Hill book with the title “The 15 laws of success”. Law number 8 entitled “Always work more than what you are paid for”, he says that doing that not only will create a good reputation for you as being someone how always give more than he receives but also will increase your abilities because you are working above your level of comfort.
6. Action Plan
This event serves as a reminder to me to always write my email very professional. I am going to watch a Linkedin course on writing emails and implement the tips provided in the video.
